DLDsummer 15 - Barefoot Living (Sabrina Fox)
2015-06-23 08:45:38 UTC
Last July Sabrina embarked on a very unusual adventure. She took her shoes off for a year. She wanted to find out what would happen: To her feet, to her wellbeing, to her surroundings. In the last twenty-five years she has studied and written about the mind-body-connection and was often barefoot herself: At home, on vacation, on the beach, on a nice piece of grass. The usual. But now she went everywhere without shoes: City pavements, planes, trains, restaurants, first-class-hotels, on stage when she gave talks, to family gatherings. Her 87year old mother is still waiting for the famous bladder infection, or at least a cold, one is rumored to get by being barefoot. She will be speaking last on Monday on the DLD stage. And that is a very appropriate position: Because our feet are often the last thing we think off...

DLDsummer 15 - Stem Cells: The Future of Medicine (Eckhard Alt)
2015-06-22 13:21:38 UTC
Over the past 50 years, there has been great progress in medicine primarily due to the use of artificial implants restoring compromised body functions. The next generation of medicine will be to better understand the healing power and the repair mechanisms which are intrinsic to our body based on stem cells. Research over the last years has revealed that stem cells are distributed throughout the whole body as they are located in every blood vessel. Each organ has its own stem cell pool which serves as its primary regenerative source. However the use of these “repair cells” is confined to the respective organ. Future stem cell therapy will be based on the possibility to retrieve stem cells from an organ that is not compromised by the removal of a part of its stem cell pool, to separate and concentrate these cells, and to inject them into a target organ or site of the body in need of repair. The primary source of these naturally pluripotent stem cells are the small blood vessels located within the adipose tissue as the impact of removal of tissue on the site of recovery typically is low. The number of stem cells to be found in the adipose tissue, when an adequate recovery and processing method is applied, is in a range of nearly one million cells per gram tissue, which is many fold higher than for cells found in the bone marrow. Current experience and results from clinical treatment with pluripotent stem cells has shown a very high safety profile and remarkable results in treating various diseases, such as orthopedic conditions, skin repair non-healing wounds and other diseases.

Who is the Fifth Horseman?
2015-05-13 08:30:09 UTC
Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google are the four horsemen, companies who are collectively the size of Lexington, Kentucky and have the GDP of Australia. Can any other company join their ranks? In his talk at DLD NYC, Scott Galloway discusses the contenders for the fifth horseman position and ranks their likelihood to join their top tier based on an eight-piece algorithm. The fifth horseman must have a differentiated product, cheap access to capital, a global consumer-base, a maternal attitude towards employees, inventory control through vertical distribution, knowledge consumer identities, a strong brand used as a vanity play and technical literacy. Seven companies (Uber, Alibaba, Starbucks, Linkedin, Tesla, Nike, and Walmart) come close, but none have demonstrated all of the above characteristics. Walmart, Linkedin, and Alibaba don’t have a brand people want to associate with. Starbucks spends more on its employees than on coffee beans, but does not have access to cheap capital. Tesla has a finite consumer base rather than a global one. And although Nike is a prestigious global brand and a fantastic place to work, its product is not all that differentiated from competitors. Uber was the closest brand to the four horsemen. One million people ride the service every day, which is more than the Chicago CTA or Boston T. At 162,000 drivers, Uber’s employee base is triple that of Delta Airlines. So where does Uber lag in the algorithm? It does not have a maternal attitude towards employees, as it has access to the cheapest source of on-demand labor without unions or health insurance. While that is good for users and the company, Scott Galloway questions its benefits for society. Subscribe to L2 insights: Subscribe to L2 videos: Scott is a Clinical Professor at the NYU Stern School of Business where he teaches brand strategy and digital marketing, and is the Founder of L2, a member-based business intelligence and education firm. Luc de Brabandere (BCG) suggests a theory how to foster a new kind of creative process that is not only practical but sustainable, which enables to remain creative over the long haul. Luc de Brabandere helps to structure our thinking and construct new boxes.

DLD Tel Aviv 2011 - Interview with Hila Oren
2011-11-24 10:08:56 UTC
She truly understands the DNA of global cities of today. As General Director of the Tel Aviv Global City Administration, Hila Oren at the DLD Tel Aviv summit clearly defines the city`s global role model qualities in being an international centre, able to combine both: business and culture. Creativity Oren states as a core value of this never sleeping city of around 380 000 residents, counting over 4500 start ups. For her, Tel Avivians are "entrepreneurs by character, who are not afraid of failure". And charmingly she compliments DLD as being Tel Aviv`s twin sister: "Both share the same spirit".
DLD Tel Aviv 2011 - Interview with Richard C. Schneider
2011-11-24 10:08:56 UTC
Since five years he has been Bureau Chief and Chief Correspondent of the ARD German Television in Tel Aviv. Many times he reported about the Palestinian conflict and in 2009 was awarded the Bayerische Fernsehpreis (Bavarian TV award) for his documentation "Days of Horror" on the war in the Gaza Strip. At DLD Tel Aviv, Munich born Richard Schneider explained, how German Radio and TV are about to make a major turn towards Internet and Social Media using as many different forms of distribution as possible and on all online platforms available.
DLD Tel Aviv 2011 - Interview with Zell Students
2011-11-24 10:08:56 UTC
The Zell Entrepreneurship Program is designed for outstanding students with proven business and leadership abilities in their final year of studies. The program, which is taught in English, provides students with practical tools and theoretical knowledge to establish and operate an entrepreneurial venture, from the inception of an idea to fruition of a company producing value. This year-long academic program begins in the summer and continues through the academic year. In addition to establishing a venture, students will participate in courses and workshops in various areas that are particularly relevant to business entrepreneurs. They also will participate in an entrepreneurship workshop that consists of lectures and meetings with entrepreneurs, investors and professionals involved in various stages of establishing a venture. The program also includes a 10-day study tour abroad. The program's admissions requirements include an outstanding academic record, a familiarity with business entrepreneurship and a passion for excellence. At DLD Tel Aviv (#dldtelaviv) we got the chance to talk to three Zell students, Or Ben-Oz, Gon Ben David, and Aaron Scott Dubin.
DLD Tel Aviv 2011 - Interview with Stav Shaffir
2011-11-24 10:08:56 UTC
She hasn't slept for more than four hours straight since the 14th of July, and never has been so happy. Still, there is no sign of fatigue when I got the chance to talk to the social activist Stav Shaffir at the DLD Tel Aviv Summit. Stav is one of the protest leaders of the movement for social justice and inclusion in Israel. Describing it as a "wide open social network filled with hope", she believes that optimism is the key to stand together for a change. Even though the current security issue in Israel adumbrates the movement for social justice, the protesters decrease in numbers and the tents have long disappeared at Rothschild Boulevard, she is burning of hope that the movement will outwear the winter and is here to stay. Despite the cleavages of Israeli society -- class, religion, ethnicity -- this summer has shown that there is a common-ground for an Israeli society as a whole. This society already exists and it's on the government now to fix the broken connection to their sovereign, the people. "A revolution is not a matter of one summer or spring," she concludes, "this is just the beginning."
DLD Tel Aviv 2011 - Interview with Michal Levy
2012-01-31 10:39:08 UTC
As a child, Michal Levy used to express her emotions equally in painting, dancing and music. Twenty years later, as she told at DLD Tel Aviv, she discovered, that her synesthetic intelligence was much more than a talent, it was her destiny. At the Jerusalem Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, she studied visual communication and experienced, that digital technology could become her vehicle in connecting music and visuals. So, as her thesis project, she produced her first music-animated short film "Giant Steps", which became a huge success, being viewed by more than one million people online and being presented in galleries, magazines and on festivals around the world. Being a saxophone player herself, Levy translated "Giant Steps" from 1959, the groundbreaking Album of American Jazz-Saxophonist John Coltrane, into congenial visual architecture. Soon "One" followed as her second music-animation, again documenting, what Michal claims to be her artistic challenge: "I want to understand, how music looks and to communicate to as many people as possible what I see, when I hear". Meet Michal Levy in the video below to learn more about the colors of music.
DLD Tel Aviv 2011: In-Depth Interview - Assaf Biderman (MIT SENSEable Lab)

Imagine the City as the (early days of the) Internet
DLD Tel Aviv 2011 - Interview with Assaf Biderman
2011-11-24 10:08:56 UTC
Assaf Biderman is moving like a whirlwind through cities. Once gone, the mind-set of urban planners is tossed upside down and not only a few concepts are broken in pieces and make way for a slightly more revolutionary approach. His track record speaks for itself. As advisor, he is working in partnership with the most innovative city administrations and industry members worldwide. Facing the challenges of increasing urbanisation, Assaf focuses on how distributed technologies (like your smartphone) can be used to improve our understanding of cities and create a more sustainable future living in urban environments. As Associate Director of the MIT SENSEable City Laboratory, he was involved in enigmatic projects like the Trash Track (mapping the real-time movement of thousands of tagged trash items in Seattle) or the Copenhagen Wheel (hybrid bicycle wheels with environmental sensors for the City of Copenhagen). At DLD Tel Aviv, we got the chance to talk to him about the "City as the Internet". His exuberant passion for the visionary medication he offers is inarguably overwhelming - and has left many with a brain crush on him. Watch the video below to explore the ideas he shared between the mayor's office and the conference stage.

DLD Tel Aviv 2011 - Interview with Gregory Blatt
2012-01-31 10:40:06 UTC
As Head of Marketing and Communications of the Lausanne based company Solar Impulse, Gregory Blatt at DLD Tel Aviv is thrilled to be surrounded by such a big number of entrepreneurs and risk taking founders. When psychiatrist and aeronaut Bertrand Piccard, having made the first non-stop-around-the-world balloon flight, eight years ago launched the project together with Andrew Borschberg, engineer and pilot, not anyone believed in their dream, to fly day and night without fuel, only powered by solar energy. However, after seven years of feasibility studies, simulation, tests and construction, Piccard and Borschberg finally were able to achieve their first solar day-and-night-flight in history, taking them 26 hours, 10 minutes and 19 seconds. So, another vision has come true, as Blatt puts it, proving Jules Verne`s credo: "All that is impossible, remains to be achieved". To learn more about Solar Impulse, go to the video below.

DLD Tel Aviv 2011 - Interview with Dov Ganchrow
2012-01-31 10:39:27 UTC
The man, who issues this statement, together with his partner Ami Drach back in 1996 started their Dov Ganchrow & Ami Drach-Design Studio-Partnership in Tel Aviv. Humor, American born Ganchrow claims to be the red line through their wide range of projects covering medical product design as well as museum exhibitions, furniture and lightning. To design in our postindustrial society, he explains at DLD Tel Aviv, means, to "communicate through objects". The special qualities of Israeli design Ganchrow describes as being conceptual, coming from words and thoughts more than from materials and form. "It is about, what lies behind the form", he claims. "We are forming ideas, and ideas can take on many forms". To experience, why Ganchrow thinks Israeli design to be in particular up to date, go to the video below.
