DeVICE Free Coffee Talk
This talk seeks to investigate and reflect on the regressive elements of our collective digital media ecology. Media ecology is the study of how media and communication processes affect human perception and understanding. Biesenbach and Moretti will address our historical moment (and our near future), in reference to Jeremy Rifkin’s work. Rifkin considers our society to be on the brink of a third industrial revolution, which will affect change in three pillars of society: communication (from TV and radio to the Internet), energy (from fossil fuels to renewable energy), and mobility (from cars to self-driving). All of this will likely transform our capitalist economy. Essential to these changes are big data, renewable energy and 3D printing. Biesenbach and Morretti’s critical perspective will shed light on the potential drawbacks of the increasing digitalization of our society. The idea is to ask guests to leave their phones outside of the conference room, thus “DeVice Free” coffee-talk.
