Daniel Michaels is Brussels Bureau Chief of The Wall Street Journal, overseeing coverage of the European Union, European affairs, NATO and European security.
Prior to this position in April 2017, Mr. Michaels was the Journal’s German Business Editor for three years, based in Frankfurt, overseeing corporate reporting on Europe’s biggest economy and coverage of the European Central Bank.
For 15 years prior to that, Mr. Michaels was the Journal’s Aerospace & Aviation Editor for Europe, based in Paris and Brussels. In that position he covered airlines, aviation and aerospace industries in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, and coordinated with other Journal reporters worldwide.
From 1993 to 1999, Mr. Michaels covered Central & Eastern Europe for the Journal, based in Warsaw, focusing on business, politics and society. He initially went to Poland in 1991 to work as a management consultant in privatization; he also worked briefly on privatization in Russia.
Before moving to Poland, Mr. Michaels was a management consultant with Booz, Allen & Hamilton in New York City, working across a range of industries in the U.S. and Canada.
Mr. Michaels is a native of New York and graduated from Princeton University, where he studied China and East Asia. In addition to living in Europe since 1991, he earlier lived and worked in China and Taiwan. He speaks French, Polish, Mandarin Chinese and basic German.
