Born 1942 in Marburg/Lahn, Professor Roth studied philosophy, German literature and musicology at the Universities of Münster and Rome. After having obtained his PhD in Philosophy at the University of Münster, he went on studying biology at the universities of Münster and Berkeley, California, followed by a PhD in zoology. He was appointed to a professorship in behavioural physiology and neurobiology at the University of Bremen, and is Director of the Institute of brain research. He also is President of the German National Merit Foundation. Professor Roth has published around 200 works in the field of neurobiology and neurotheory, among them the books "Fühlen, Denken, Handel. Wie das Gehirn unser Verhalten steuert. Suhrkamp, Frankfurt 2003" and "Persönlichkeit, Entscheidung und Verhalten. Warum es so schwierig ist, sich und andere zu ändern. Klett-Cotta, Stuttgart, 2007"
