Hubert Damisch was born in Paris in 1928. After a first career as a jazz musician, he studied philosophy at the Sorbonne in the 1950’s, where Merleau Ponty introduced him to a large range of cultural topics and to perspective through the texts of Erwin Panofsky. He was trained as an art historian by Pierre Francastel. His doctoral dissertation, La Théorie du Nuage, was rejected by his thesis advisor before being published at the Editions du Seuil in 1972. The major portion of his academic career was spent at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes in Paris where he created the Center for History and Theory of Art (CEHTA). He was also invited by Jacques Derrida to hold a seminar the Ecole Normale for over ten years. Particularly recognized in the USA, he was resident scholar at the Society for the Humanities at Cornell and at the Getty Research Institute in LA; appointed Kress Professor at the Center for Advanced Studies in the Visual Arts (CASVA); Washington. D.C.; the Meyer Schapiro professor at Columbia University, NY, and the Mellon scholar at the Canadian Center for Architecture, Montreal. Damisch's writings, with their semiotic, anthropological and psychoanalytical leanings range across periods from the Renaissance to the present, incorporating studies on works of art, architecture, aesthetics, film, photography and philosophical meditations ; they are models of analysis resulting from a rigorous and prolonged engagement with the object. His books have been translated into several languages, among those published in English are : The Origin of Perspective, MIT Press, 1994.
