Professor James W. Davis is Dean of the School of Economics and Political Science at the University of St. Gallen, where he was appointed Professor of Political Science and Director of the Institute of Political Science in April 2005. He is also Associate Editor of the journal Security Studies.

Dr. Davis holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University and has published in leading journals on questions of international institutions, foreign policy, military strategy, arms control and bargaining. He is the author and editor of four books. The most recent (together with Christopher Daase), Clausewitz on Small War, was published by Oxford University Press in October 2015. Professor Davis served for five years as the Associate Editor of the European Journal of International Relations and previously served on the editorial staff of Foreign Affairs, the flagship journal of the New York-based Council on Foreign Relations.

Through his public service, Professor Davis strives to build bridges between the university and the policy community as well as between Europe and the United States. He was an expert member of the Parliamentary Commission on Foreign Deployments of the German Armed Forces of the German Bundestag, a member of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Expert Group on Germany’s Image Abroad, a member of the NATO Supreme Allied Commander's delegation to Afghanistan and numerous commissions and working groups of the Swiss and Bavarian governments.
