Jonathan Meese was born in 1970 in Tokyo and lives in Berlin and Ahrensburg. From 1993-1998 he studied with Franz Erhard Walther at Hochschule der Bildenden Künste in Hamburg. With his installation in the first Berlin Biennale in 1998, curated by Klaus Biesenbach, he introduced himself to the international art scene. His work extends across installation and performance, painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, and surrounds to writing and stage design and directing in the theater and opera field.

He has been performing at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York (1999), KW Kunstwerke, Berlin (2000), Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Berlin (2005), Tate Modern, London (2006), Ballroom, Marfa (2006). His work has been shown in the Biennials of VentoSul in Curritiba, Brasil (2013), the Triennial in Yokohama, Tokyo (2008) and Santa Fe, New Mexico (2006). Solo Exhibitions were presented by Kestner Gesellschaft, Hannover (2002), Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt (2004), Deichtorhallen Hamburg (2006), Magasin Grenoble (2007), Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (2010) and Museum der Moderne in Salzburg (2013). He participated in group exhibitions at Centre Pompidou, Paris (2005), Martin Gropius Bau, Berlin (2009), and Guggenheim Museum, New York (2010), 21er Haus, Vienna (2012), Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart (2013). He has been working for theatre and opera since 2004, creating the stage design of Kokain by Pitigrilli at Volksbühne Berlin (2004), and Dionysos at the Salzburg Festival (2010).

Wiener Festwochen invited him in collaboration with Berliner Festspiele to create the stage direction, stage design and costumes for a contemporary interpretation of Richard Wagners opera „Parsifal“. The new opera composed by Bernhard Lang will be having its world premiere under the title „MONDPARSIFAL ALPHA 1-8“ in Vienna 4 June 2017 and will then be hosted at the Berliner Festspiele as „MONDPARSIFAL BETA 8-13“, in Berlin 15 October 2017.
