Julia Jäkel studied history, political science and economics in Heidelberg, Germany and at Harvard University in the USA. In 1996 she earned a Master's degree (MPhil) from Cambridge University in England. She started her career at Bertelsmann, the main shareholder of Gruner + Jahr, in 1997. After completing a traineeship, she was appointed Managing Editor of GALA magazine. From 1999 Julia Jäkel was a member of the founding team of Financial Times Germany (FTD), first as Deputy Managing Editor. In 2004 she took over the position of Publishing Director of the Brigitte Group. In 2008 she was named Managing Director of the corporate unit G+J Exclusive & Living. In February 2012 Julia Jäkel became Managing Director of the newly created corporate unit G+J LIFE, a position in which she was responsible for more than 20 media brands, several holdings and the corporate publishing business of G+J Corporate Editors. In September 2012 she joined the Executive Board of Gruner + Jahr and took on responsibility for the entire magazine and digital business of G+J Germany. In April 2013 Julia Jäkel was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the G+J Executive Board. At the same time, she became a member of the Bertelsmann Group Management Committee (GMC). Julia Jäkel is married and has two children.
