Nora N. Khan
Nora Khan is a writer and acting editor at Rhizome, a lead supporter of contemporary artists working online and with digital technology. She writes on experimental art, digital visual culture, and philosophy of technology for Mousse, Art in America, The Village Voice, 4Columns, Flash Art, and California Sunday, with exhibition essays commissioned by Serpentine Galleries and Chisenhale Gallery, and by Sternberg Press for the Estonian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. As a research resident at Eyebeam this past year, she focused on the mediation of language through AI, bots, and simulations. She speaks frequently on art and music practices that engage with artificial intelligence at Triple Canopy, transmediale, UCLA IDEAS, New School, Parsons, and NYU. She has spoken at the Whitney Museum on Ian Cheng's live simulations as part of New Ways to See: Digital Art Criticism Now, and at New Museum, on the present and future of AI, for Open Score, an art and technology symposium. A large part of her practice as an editor and writer is close collaboration with artists and musicians internationally, including Steven Warwick (with whom she wrote a book, Fear Indexing the X-Files, published by Primary Information), Yuri Pattison, Jeremy Shaw, Katja Novitskova, and Bill Kouligas, with her commissioned poetry, librettos, and fiction performed at venues like Volksbühne (Berlin) and Sinne Gallery (Helsinki). She studied fiction writing at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, and before that, history, literature, and theory at Harvard. She is now a professor at Hunter/CUNY, teaching a course on hybrid criticism of art and technology.
