The Frankfurt artist and prominent representative of German art, Thomas Bayrle, taught at the Academy of Fine Arts, Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main from 1975 to 2002. He has received a number of awards and prizes, including the Prix Ars Electronica, Linz (A) in 1995, the Hessischer Staatspreis für Kultur (Hessian State Prize for Culture) in 1998 and the Kölner Kunstpreis (Cologne Art Prize) in 2000. Bayrle has said, "My view of society is flat - horizontal - (electric) field / fabric / network. The vertical elements are plucked from the surface, like hay grass in a meadow." In 2002 and 2003, the Städelschule honoured Bayrle with an exhibition featuring his work throughout his lifetime. Bayrle's artwork has been shown in 33 solo exhibitions at venues around the world including: "40 Years of Rock N' Roll" (2006); and documenta 3 and 6 (1964,1977). Top group exhibitions have included: documenta VI; "Dreams and Nightmares: Utopian Visions in Modern Art" (1984); "La Ville" (1994); "Shopping" (2002); "50.Biennale di Venezia" (2003); "Guangzhou Triennale" (2005); and "'Of Mice and Men' 4th berlin biennial for contemporary art" (2006).
