Verena Bentele, born in 1982, is the Commissioner for Matters relating to Disabled Persons at Federal Government of Germany.
As a blind biathlete and cross-country skier, she was Germany’s most successful Paralympic athlete, winning 12 golden medals at 4 Paralympic Games in Nagano, Salt Lake City, Turin and Vancouver.
In 2010, she won the "Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability" award. After retiring in 2011 at the age of 29, she became a motivational speaker, coach and publisher. On 2013, she climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and, as first blind mountaineer ever, Mount Meru.
