After his academic studies and receiving his doctor's degree at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Munich, Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Wolfgang M. Heckl assisted the Nobel prize winners Gerd Binnig and Theodor Hänsch. In 2009, Heckl was appointed to the Oskar von Miller professorship of scientific communication at the School of Education within the Munich University of Technology. For his always comprehensible and also entertaining communication of difficult scientific coherencies in the media he received the Communicator Award from the Donors' Association for the Promotion of Sciences and Humanities in Germany and the "Descartes prize for excellence in science communication" from the European Commission. He heads the Deutsches Museum since 2004 as its director general.
